Packaged software, a no-code platform or custom software?

When you digitise a business process, there are three routes. None of them is right in every case. This page sets out the strengths and weaknesses of each route, when MitosOne is a good fit — and when it is not.

Route 1

Packaged software

Strength: mature, ready-to-use functionality for standard, regulation-driven work such as accounting, payroll and statutory reporting.

Weakness: processes that don’t fit the package’s assumptions are handled either by changing how the company works or by raising a consulting and development request for every change.

Good fit when: your processes are close to the industry standard.

Route 2

Custom software development

Strength: every detail is exactly the way you want it.

Weakness: permissions, audit log, reporting, mobile and integrations are rewritten every time; maintenance and changes depend on the software team.

Good fit when: the software is the product itself, or the requirement is so specialised that no platform can meet it.

Route 3

No-code business platform

Strength: company-specific data structures and approval workflows are built from the interface; permissions, audit log, mobile, reporting and API come from the platform; when the process changes, the system changes the same day.

Weakness: deep, regulation-driven vertical functionality (e.g. full accounting and statutory submissions) is not as mature as in packaged products; someone has to do the setup.

Good fit when: your processes are specific to you and change often.

When is MitosOne a good fit?

  • When departmental processes (purchase requests, leave/expenses, CAPA, maintenance, contract approval) run on Excel and email.
  • When your packaged software handles the core business but the specific processes around it are left outside.
  • When you need row- and field-level permissions, segregation of duties and an audit log.
  • When your data needs to stay on your own servers (on-premises).

When is another route better?

  • If what you mainly need is full accounting, payroll and statutory e-document submission — packaged products focused on regulation are more mature for this work; MitosOne can be used alongside them as a process layer.
  • If you need machine and line control — MitosOne does not send commands to devices and has no PLC/OPC drivers.
  • If your processes already fit the assumptions of a ready-made product — the setup effort may not be necessary.

This comparison is between software categories; it is not based on measurements of specific products. More details: What is MitosOne? · approval workflows · platform
